This is the greatest moment in the history of Romanian soccer. Romania, for the first time in their history, would reach the knockout stage. They had qualified for the knockout stage by topping their group. Argentina came out of the group stage as a third-place qualifier. Argentina’s captain Maradona was excluded from the squad after testing positive for banned stimulants. Claudio Caniggia was also unavailable, but Argentina could still boast of a brilliant Serie A-based pairing of Gabriel Batistuta and Abel Balbo, but even that didn’t affect the Romanians as they fought hard to battle out a 3-2 victory over the two-time world champions.

England played the greatest Brazil side that the world had ever seen in the group stages of the 1970 World Cup in Mexico boasting a team full of stars like Pele, Jairzinho, Rivelino, Gerson, Carlos Alberto, and Tostao. They were favorites to win the cup, but Brazil registered the 1-0 win through a goal from Jairzinho. Four years later, West Germany got revenge over England in the 1970 World Cup quarter-final, scoring an extra-time goal after the score was made even after the 82nd minute. England had scored early through Alan Mullery and Martin Peters, but were unable to defend their title and, their two-goal lead crashed out after Gerd Muller scored the winning goal at 108th minute. In one of the acclaimed World Cup finals knockout games, Belgium’s golden generation knocked out the Soviet Union side in a 4-3 scoreline. The scoreline was leveled at 2-2 by the 90th minute and, in extra time, Belgium scored through Stephane Demol and Nico Claesen. Igor Belanov scored his third of the game, but the USSR, with grief, we’re unable to find a last-minute equalizer, leading to Belgium’s advance to the quarter-final against Spain.
