Winners- It is no news that the coronavirus pandemic has put all the major leagues to a halt. The virus has not spared any strata of society. Footballers, coaches, politicians, and movie celebs have all experienced the pandemic. Mikel Arteta was the first high profile case in England before Chelsea’s Callum Hudson-Odoi tested positive few days later. In Italy, Juventus’ duo of Rugani and Matuidi have also tested positive. Sampdoria’s team doctor and five players are also positive.
The outbreak which has led to the postponement of the 2020 European Championship and the Copa America has had football associations at sixes and sevens. Some have suggested that the season be decided as things stand in England. On the other hand, some are suggesting that the season be declared null and void.
These suggestions are not entirely good or bad either. However, should the 2019/2020 season be concluded as it stands, there will be some winners if that were to happen. Entire teams or individual players are bound to be favored if such a decision was taken. Here are some teams or players that will emerge winners if the season was concluded as it stands:
#1. Jamie Vardy
The Leicester City frontman will definitely be one of the winners should the season be decided as it stands. Vardy has been a consistent goalscorer since he announced himself to the Premier League in the 2015/2016 season. The only issue is that he has never won the golden boot. He ran ahead of other contenders with a scintillating goalscoring form in the middle of the season but a goal drought saw Aubameyang and co. catch up with him. However, Vardy scored a brace against Aston Villa before the league was suspended to bring his tally to 19 goals. Should the season be concluded, he’d be the golden boot winner.
The battle for fourth place is very tense in England as things stand. Chelsea occupy the much coveted spot but are just 8 points above Arsenal who have a game in hand in 10th place. Between them are Manchester United, Wolves, Sheffield United, and Tottenham Hotspur. There is definitely no guarantee that the Blues will be able to hold on to their position with 9 games left to be played. Chelsea would definitely be happy to end the season as it stands.
Juventus have been the winners of the Scudetto for the past 8 seasons with A.C. Milan being the last team to win it before them. No team has been able to mount a serious challenge against the Turin-based side since they gained dominance. However, the 2019/2020 season is a different story. Juventus top the Serie A table with 63 points with Lazio closely following at 62 points after 26 games. Lazio are seriously giving them a run for their money with Ciro Immobile in the form of his life. It is safe to say Juventus will be one of the winners should the season be ended as it stands.
Barcelona have won more La Liga than arch-rivals Real Madrid in the last 10 years but there is something different about the 2019/2020 La Liga season. The two superpowers have been too inconsistent with 27 games into the season. Barcelona are first with 58 points with Real Madrid following with 56 points. There are no straight favorites between the two teams based on form and performance and if the season was to be decided, fans of the Catalan side would definitely not mind.
The battle for survival in England is as tough as the battle for Champions League spots. Watford began the season in a dismal fashion that saw them amass one point in the opening nine games. The ship has also not been steady at the top. The Hornets are currently under a third manager after Javi Garcia and Quique Sanchez Flores all faced the sack. Nigel Pearson has begun a revival with the Hornets out of the relegation zone on goal difference. This revival saw them ran out 3-0 winners against Liverpool on matchday 28. Pearson’s men will get to stay in the Premier League should the season be decided.
#6. Manchester United
The fifth-placed team at the end of the 2019/2020 Premier League potentially gets to play in the Champions League. Second-placed Manchester City are currently facing a ban from the Champions League which has made the fifth position a Champions League spot. Manchester United current sit there with 45 points with only five points above Arsenal in 10th place. Solskjaer’s men have found form before the season was suspended but have also been plagued by inconsistency. An abrupt end to the season will definitely be in their favor.
Genoa are not having the best of seasons currently. The Griffin have just six games and amassed a paltry 25 points out a possible 78. This puts them on an average of less than a point per game and puts them just above the relegation zone on goal difference. Their hope of survival is as slim as that of Leece, Brescia, and SPAL who occupy the relegation spots. They will definitely be one of the winners should the season be decided as it stands.
Atalanta’s goalscoring form has been very good. They currently ranked fourth with 48 points but have scored more goals (70) than any other team in the Serie A so far. They occupy the last Champions League spot on the log but Roma are breathing down their neck with 45 points in fifth place. Atalanta do have a game in hand but who would not love to winners in a battle without lifting the sword.
#9. Celta Vigo
Celta Vigo are another team embroiled in a battle for survival. Celta’s performance has slumped over the years and with 27 games into the current La Liga season, they only have 26 points. They are just a point above the relegation zone and they are far from safe with 11 games yet to be played. An end to the season will definitely be a decision they will welcome with open hands.
#10. Robert Lewandowski
Lewandowski’s goalscoring form has been impeccable this season. He leads the Bundesliga goalscoring charts with 25 goals but there is another lethal finisher following him. Timo Werner has scored 21 league goals this season and still has a shot at the Torjagerkanone with 13 league games to go. Lewandowski is definitely not scared of a challenge but has the chance to claim the prize should be decided.
