LOSERS- It is no news that the coronavirus pandemic has put all the major leagues to a halt. The virus has not spared any strata of society. Footballers, coaches, politicians, and movie celebs have all experienced the pandemic. Mikel Arteta was the first high profile case in England before Chelsea’s Callum Hudson-Odoi tested positive few days later. In Italy, Juventus’ duo of Rugani and Matuidi have also tested positive. Sampdoria’s team doctor and five players are also positive.
The outbreak which has led to the postponement of the 2020 European Championship and the Copa America has had football associations at sixes and sevens. Some have suggested that the season be decided as things stand in England. On the other hand, some are suggesting that the season be declared null and void.
These suggestions are not entirely good or bad either. However, should the 2019/2020 season be concluded as it stands, there will be some losers if that were to happen. Entire teams or individual players are bound to be favored if such a decision was taken. Here are some teams or players that will emerge winners if the season was concluded as it stands:
Lazio would definitely be hard done by should the season be concluded. Inspired by Ciro Immobile, the Rome-based football club have mounted a genuine title challenge. They are currently one point behind leaders Juventus and are still well placed to win the league. They’d be on the losing side should the season end abruptly. Immobile has also scored 27 league goals so far and a decision to end the season would turn his effort into a waste
Arsenal are having their worst season in decades. The Gunners have been stuck at the middle of the table for weeks 40 goals scored and 36 conceded. This is in part due to Unai Emery and the Gunners are yet to find consistency under Mikel Arteta. However, the North London club are still with a slim chance to qualify for the Champions League with many believing they are able to make fifth place. They will be one of the losers should the season be concluded.
#3. The Golden Boot Chasing Pack
The race for the Premier League Golden Boot was really heating up before the suspension. Jamie Vardy leads the pack with 19 goals after his brace against Aston Villa while Aubameyang (17), Aguero (16), Salah (16) are all in for the prize as well. There are still 9 matchdays to go in the Premier League and anyone could still win it but Vardy gets to profit from a concluded season as it stands.
#4. Real Madrid
Real Madrid will be one of the big losers if the season was decided as it stands. They have matched Barcelona toe-to-toe so far though they are two points behind on the stands. Los also Blancos got the better of their rivals getting four points over the two-legs of the El-Clasico. They are not ruled out of the title race in any way as Barcelona have been inconsistent as themselves. However, Barcelona stands to be champions should the season be concluded.
#5. Fortuna Dusseldorf
Fortuna Dusseldorf are four points above the relegation zone but occupy the relegation playoff spot with 22 points. Above them are FSV Mainz 05 who have 26 points. The Bundesliga side are definitely not safe yet as there is no guarantee that they’d win the playoff game against Hamburger SV who occupy the promotion playoff spot in 2. Bundesliga. A conclusion based on current standings does not favor them at all.
#6. Bayer Leverkusen
Leverkusen will also be one of the losers should the Bundesliga be concluded based on current standings. They sit in fifth place with a point behind Borussia Monchengladbach who has 50 points and occupy Bundesliga’s last Champions League spot. Leverkusen are not in a poor form in any way and are still in the Europa League. An end to the season will see them miss out on Champions League qualification.
Now we go to Spain where Getafe stands to be losers should the current season be decided as things stand. They are tied with Real Sociedad on 46 points and +12 goal difference who occupy the last Champions League spot based on head-to-head rules. The La Liga outfit are not likely to win the Europa League so the domestic league is their only hope. However, they are not at a favorable place on the log.
Still in Spain, Mallorca are currently ranked 18th with 25 points after 27 games. That is definitely relegation form but it is not over yet as they are just a point from safety. Celta Vigo are just ahead of them with 26 points but Mallorca are bound to suffer relegation should the season be decided as it stands.
The Portuguese Primeira Liga is one of the most competitive leagues in Europe. The current League standings puts Porto in the first place with 60 points while Benifa sits second with 59 points. Benfica stands to be big losers if the season was concluded with the current league situation. They get to miss out on the title race and an automatic Champions League qualifying spot.
LOSC Lille were the casualties of a tough Champions League group that had Chelsea, Ajax, and Valencia. Their performance in Ligue 1 is laudable though but they are ranked fifth with just a point outside the Champions League places. They will feel hard done by should the season be concluded based on current standings.
Conclusion on Potential Losing Teams
Though Leagues have been suspended, UEFA and other football governing bodies are working on how to make sure the season is concluded as it ought to. However, the power is not entirely in their hands as the coronavirus pandemic seems to be strengthening its grip on the planet.
